The Richest Man in New Babylon
What did you like about the book?
The useful information and how it was presented was very easy to grasp and digest. Could see how these rules could apply to my life.
I liked how it was explained like a real life story. This story could apply to anyone.
Interesting way to teach a lesson.
It was a great way to present dry, but crucial info to a person not only recently released from prison, but one who was never taught the fundamentals of managing money (i.e, urban and marginalized populations.).
How it addressed the numerous difficulties formerly incarcerated individuals face upon reentering society.
Were there things about the book that you did not like?
It seemed as though it was relatable but really only to a specific type of person.
I liked it all. Very easy to read and understand.
Some of the story line. Afterword concepts could be integrated earlier in the book.
I did not think the author should have painted such a “rosy picture” about the ease in which Jamaal was able to meet the right people at the right time, and who were always sympathetic. Jamaal’s having been in prison! It’s not that easy, realistically!
The only thing that I had a hard time grasping was how neatly each person fell into place. I hope people have the same type of experience.
What do you think the author could do to improve the book? What would make it better?
I would tell the author that this book while relatable is focused on the male ex-convict or parolee demographic. It might help to try to fit in a female twist perhaps.
I would recommend some other agencies besides the library. Maybe the Social Security office, DOL, schools that offer classes like a vocational school, or social service.
I would tell the author to be more specific about the “mechanics" of a person’s foray into the world of finance. For example, not just state “open a savings account, checking account, etc.” but what you need to do it: forms of ID, how to get a Social Security card, license etc. I know at my home library they require several forms of ID (i.e. utility or cable bill with your name on it, picture ID). Also a list of additional helpful websites would be invaluable: SSA, AARP, AAA, DMV, and government assistance websites (food stamps, Medicaid).
Jamaal only had difficulty with his boss at the plant. Maybe including other bumps in the road would make it more relatable. Also include more info about tax preparation – some people will still find your instructions discouraging.
If you were going to recommend the book to a friend, what would you say?
If you are struggling with managing your finances after returning from being incarcerated this book has “rules” that could help you try to get a better grasp on your money and your ability to network and various ideas with your money, and ways to save it and/or multiply it. It’s a fun and easy read. Can definitely be useful to many people incarcerated in the past or not.
I would tell them that it is an easy read and you could get some ideas how to prepare or save money.
The Afterword was very helpful—use more of those points throughout the book.
I would say the book is wonderful! It is an easy read, filled with relatable financial how to use that delivers a message of hope and the power of hard work and perseverance!
Please take the time to imagine yourself in Jamaal’s shoes. There is priceless wisdom for all, like rule number 10 – it’s up to you!
I feel blessed to have been given the opportunity to read and learn from The Richest Man in New Babylon. I will be getting released from prison in less than a year and definitely plan on applying all the rules into my daily routine. Like Jamaal, I had an amazing support network of people I met during my incarceration. I have, thankfully, started using some of the NA 12 steps to get me in a better frame of mind. With the added lesson from this book, Mr. Kennedy, I hope to have a smooth transition – somewhat similar to Jamaal’s. I know this will only happen if I’m willing to put the work in.
I plan on using all of the resources you highlighted and I hope I get the opportunity to thank you personally for this amazing read.
